UMBERLEIGH BRIDGE CLOSURE
The B3227 will be closed to all traffic at Umberleigh Bridge from Monday 12th August through to Friday 6th September.
The closure, which originally was due to commence on Monday 5th August was pushed back a week so as not to impact on North Devon Show and is in force to allow for bridge parapet repairs and also the installation of containment kerbs. Additional work will also be taking place on the bridge structure.
In the run up to the closure some rumours circulated that the bridge would be re-opened to traffic at weekends – but this is not the case. The contractors are hoping to keep pedestrian access across the bridge but this may be interupted when heavy lifting is taking place to protect the health safety of pedestrians.
Recently there have been a number of criticisms made on social media about the timing being in the summer holidays, but this was planned so as not to disrupt school traffic and also to ensure that the water levels running under the bridge were low enough to allow some of the work required to take place.
