The weather has been on our side recently and it allowed extra team days on several consecutive weekends, in addition to our regular Thursdays. We’ve had a few large gardening teams at the weekends and have made amazing progress in such a short time! The sweetcorn, potatoes and leeks are all planted now, as are the group beans. We’re starting to get on top of the grass mowing and strimming and the garden is looking wonderful.
Our pond area has received a bit of TLC lately and we’ve cleared some of the long grass from around the edge. We have more grass to clear along the garden boundary and a mound of soil to flatten and distribute over this area for the children to dig and play with in their mud kitchen. The young gardeners will help sift the stones from the soil and pick out as many bindweed roots as possible.
The Willy-Nilly Garden became very overgrown towards the end of last year and we have a lot of weeding to do! We made a good start during one of our weekend team days and we’ll continue over the next few weeks.
We’re very excited to announce a new live music project from the garden called “Songs from the Shed”. Our first music session will be held at the Community Garden (at the top of the Sheep Fair Field) on Saturday 6th July at 2:30pm. If you love music and good company, please come along! Bring refreshments to enjoy and share. Suggested donation £1 for members and £2 for non-members. In case of poor weather, we’ll move the music to the YMCA on Mill Street.
